Meridian employed a suffocating defense Friday, scoring two defensive touchdowns to lead the Mustangs to a 34-7 win over Tawas in the opening round of the Division 5 football playoffs. Jason Hockemeyer and Dakota Brodsky tied for the team lead with eight tackles apiece. Offensively, Matt Bowen finished with 147 yards on 17 carries to lead the Mustangs.

The Mustangs advance to the district finals Friday when they will travel to Standish-Sterling to take on the 10-0 Panthers. Game time is 7 p.m.
