Football: Junior Chargers hold tough to blank Oilers
October 17, 2008 at 1:53 pmThe junior varsity Chargers traveled to Mount Pleasant Thursday to do battle with the host Oilers and used a little offense and a whole lot of defense to come away with a 13-0 win and remain unbeaten on the season.
The Chargers got on the board at 9:32 of the second quarter when Tim Davies punched one in from a yard out to give Dow the 6-0 lead. The conversion attempt was unsuccessful.
Davies led Dow’s offensive attack with 62 yards and the score. He was joined by Conner Bruns’ 53 yards and 38 yards from Garrett Kidd.
The defense led the way with an impressive performance to record the shutout, led by Jake Riepma who finished with 13 tackles. Alex Bank contributed nine stops for the defense, but Bruns stole the show with a 70-yard interception return midway through the third quarter to put the Chargers up 13-0 following Mitch Ballard’s extra point.
Dow improved to 8-0 with the win, which sets up a battle of undefeated titans. The Chargers play host to unbeaten cross-town rival Midland High. In last year’s contest as freshmen, Dow held tough on a late two-point conversion attempt to capture a close 20-18 win. Game time is 6 p.m.
