Another day at Dow Diamond and another former CMU Chippewa leading the way in a South Bend victory.

One day after Derrick Walker blasted a two-run home run for the Silver Hawks, starting pitcher Josh Collmenter, the 2007 MAC Pitcher of the Year, hurled six shutout innings en route to South Bend’s 4-1 victory over the Great Lakes Loons.

Collmenter (8-4), a native of nearby Homer, MI, allowed only two hits and struck out four. Clay Zapada came on to pitch the ninth and pick up the save, his first of the season.

The game was scoreless until the sixth inning when South Bend scored on a Justin Miller wild pitch to make it a 1-0 Silver Hawks advantage.

South Bend tacked on three more runs in the seventh when Even Frey ripped an RBI double, followed by Matt Oxendine’s two-run single to make it a 4-0 South Bend lead.

The Loons scored their lone run on Erik Kanaby’s RBI single to make it 4-1.

Kanaby led the Loons with two hits, including a double in the ballgame.

Justin Miller (3-5) pitched six innings for the Loons and picked up his fifth loss of the season.

Great Lakes opened the series with a 3-0 win in a rain-shortened game Friday, before dropping Saturday’s contest 3-2.

The Loons conclude their series against the South Bend Silver Hawks Monday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
