Silverhawks drop Loons
June 10, 2008 at 10:51 amThe South Bend Silverhawks struck for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a three-run deficit and never trailed the rest of the ballgame en route to an 11-7 victory over the Great Lakes Loons Monday night.
The Loons took a 1-0 lead on a solo homer in the third by Kenley Jansen, his seventh of the year. Alfredo Silverio doubled later in the inning bringing home Andrew Lambo. The Loons struck for their third run an inning later with Parker Dalton’s RBI double to score Preston Mattingly.
But in the bottom half of the fourth, South Bend scored six runs on seven hits, driving starter Justin Miller (2-4) out of the game after 3 1/3 innings.
With the Loons then trailing by four runs, the Loons pulled to within two with a two-run double by Brian Mathews in the sixth inning, but would never get any closer.
South Bend added four runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead. Jarrod Parker (5-3) was the winning pitcher, allowing two earned runs in five innings.
Silverio and Mattingly had three hits each to lead the Loons’ offense. The Loons fall to a season-worst seven games under .500 (28-35).
The Loons continue their series in South Bend against the Silverhawks Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Kyle Smit returns to active duty to start for the Loons.
