Loons and Whitecaps split series
June 9, 2008 at 11:34 amThe West Michigan Whitecaps wrapped up a pair of victories Sunday over the Great Lakes Loons. The Tigers’ affiliate concluded a suspended game from Saturday, winning 10-1 over the Loons. They followed that performance with an 8-3 victory over the Loons.
The suspended game was marred by two hours, 23 minutes worth of rain delays. The Loons’ lone offense was a solo homer by Preston Mattingly, his sixth of the year. Mattingly’s homer came in the Sunday portion of the game.
In the regularly-scheduled Sunday contest, Kody Kaiser hit a three-run home run in the second inning against starter Victor Garate (4-1) to lift the Whitecaps to victory. Garate allowed four runs (three earned) for his first loss of 2008.
Alex Garabedian and Jovanny Rosario had three hits each in the loss for the Loons. Garabedian extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Great Lakes opened the series with a 9-3 win Thursday, before inclement weather took a hand. The double header scheduled for Friday was postponed, to Saturday. The Loons picked a 7-6 win in the opener, before play was suspended in the second game due to lightening. On Sunday, West Michigan won both games to split the series.
The Loons begin a four-game series in South Bend against the Silverhawks beginning Monday night at 7 p.m.
