Wizards drop Loons
May 21, 2008 at 2:04 pmOn School Kids Day at Dow Diamond, a three-run home run by Felix Carrasco lifted the Fort Wayne Wizards to a 6-5 win over the Great Lakes Loons at Dow Diamond.
The Loons scored first in the second inning when Preston Mattingly blasted his fifth home run of the season. Great Lakes added a second run in the third when Alfredo Silverio grounded into a fielder’s choice to push home Kenley Jansen and make it 2-0 Loons.
Fort Wayne countered with single runs in the fourth and fifth before Jansen drilled a home run to deep center field to give the Loons back the lead 3-2.
In the sixth, Drew Cumberland drilled an RBI double high off the right-field wall, just inches from a home run to tie the game, 3-3. The game continued to see-saw as Parker Dalton lined an RBI single to right field in the bottom half of the inning to break the tie, then would come around to score from first on Jansen’s RBI single to make it 5-3.
Felix Carrasco powered another Wizards comeback with a three-run home run, his seventh of the season to give Fort Wayne a 6-5 lead.
The Loons had a chance to tie the game in the eighth with the bases loaded, but Erik Kanaby bounced out to first to end the threat.
Justin Miller started for Great Lakes and battled control problems in his 3 2/ innings of work walking seven and striking out five but only allowing one Fort Wayne run. Bobby Blevins allowed two runs in 2 1/3 innings. Thomas Melgarejo (1-1) followed and allowed the three-run Carrasco homer to record the loss.
Jeremy Hefner started for Fort Wayne and pitched five innings allowing three runs before Stevie Delabar (2-1) came on in relief and gave up both Loons runs in the sixth, but qualified for the win. Jackson Quezada came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to pick up his seventh save of the season and his second in as many days.
The Loons fall to 21-23 while the Wizards improve to 21-24.
The Loons take on the Fort Wayne Wizards in game three a four-game series from Dow Diamond Wednesday night. Kyle Smit is scheduled to start for the Loons. Following the game there will be a fireworks display
