The Midland Dow varsity girl’s basketball team finished off its regular season Thursday, improving to 17-3 with a 63-49 win on the road against Flint Northern.

Taylor Mantyla scored 19 points and Leah Kebler had 15 as the Chargers head into next week’s district tournament on a winning note.

“What a great way to end the regular season, beating Flint Northern at their place,” said Dow coach Bob Wellman. “The girls never let Northern’s run worry them and hung on to get the win.”

The run occurred late in the third quarter when the Vikings were able to cut Dow’s lead to two with about 1:15 left. But Janae Smith hit a big three for the Chargers and Dow never looked back.

Becca Mills scored 10 points and had eight rebounds, while Mallory Groszek had nine points and four assists. Mantyla had four rebounds and three assists, as well.

“This is how we wanted to end the regular season and get us on a positive note heading into the tournament,” Wellman said. “We will hopefully go into the district next week with confidence and make a nice run in the state tournament.”
