Thanks to a strong game by Becca Mills and a Leah Kebler double-double, the Midland Dow varsity girl’s basketball team overcame a lethargic start to build a first half lead and coast to a 59-49 victory Wednesday over Flint Southwestern at H.H. Dow High School.

“A very sluggish game for our basketball team,” said Dow coach Bob Wellman. “But we played well enough to win.”

The Chargers made up for a lackluster first quarter by attacking the basket in the second, and by forcing the Knights into bad offensive situations to build a lead going into the half.

“We were more aggressive in that quarter,” Wellman said. “That gave us a nice lead to sit on for the rest of the game”

Dow controlled the paint in the second half, building a sizable rebounding advantage to control the tempo and capture the victory.

Mills led the Chargers with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Kebler accounted for 15 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Mantyla added seven points, eight rebounds, and three assists.

“Another nice win for the girls,” Wellman said. “They would like to finish the season on a good note and get ready for the district tournament.”

Dow will play its final game of the regular season Thursday when they travel to Flint Northern to take on the Vikings. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
