Share this storyThe Midland Dow varsity girl’s basketball team struggled on the glass and Arthur Hill capitalized on second-chance shots Friday as the Lumberjacks beat the Chargers 60-49 at H.H. Dow High School.
“We struggled putting the ball in the hole, and we gave up too many offensive rebounds,” said Dow coach Bob Wellman. “Arthur Hill took advantage of second and third shots and was able to put us away.”
The Chargers’ offense struggled to find the bottom of the net, but Dow continued to battle and stayed within reach. Taylor Mantyla led the charge and finished with 21 points and three assists.
“Taylor Mantyla had a good night shooting the ball and attacking the basket,” Wellman said.
Also leading the Chargers was Becca Mills, who had 12 points, 20 rebounds, and three steals for the Chargers.
Mills had a great night on the boards, but the rest of Dow struggled. In the fourth quarter the Lumberjacks led the rebounding battle and were able to capitalize on second-chance points to pull away for the win.
“We have to forget about the loss…,” Wellman said. “The only chance we have to face Arthur Hill is if we make it to the Regional finals and the girls would like to have that chance, but we have to take care of business in every one of our last games.”
The loss was Dow’s first in league play (6-1). Their record overall falls to 12-3. They look to get back in the win column Monday when they host the Wolves of Bay City Central. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.
