In an important league game, the Junior Chemics did not have to search to find the bottom of the net.

Midland scored 20 points in the opening quarter and cruised to a 49-36 victory at Flint Central High School Friday.

“We were able to get open shots and knock them down,” said Midland coach Larry Kastl. “We scored twenty points in the first quarter and twenty points in any quarter is great.”

The Chemics offense did a good job moving the ball against Central. Smart, timely passes helped them slice through the Phoenix defense to jump out to an early lead.

Midland was led by Chelsea Dull and Alex Kerlin who finished with 10 and 9 points respectively. But their attack was multidimensional as both Rachel Sugnet and Justine Doyle contributed eight points, as well.

“Alex Kerlin came off the bench and did a nice job,” Kastl said. “She was able to hit some open shots. Justine Doyle also came up big tonight. This was her best game.”

Midland made smart decisions with the ball, limiting turnovers, which allowed them to coast the rest of the way for the win.

“I am pleased with the victory tonight,” Kastl said. “We have two big games next week and I hope that this will give us a little boost.”

The Chemics are in action again Wednesday when they host the Cavaliers of Carman Ainsworth. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
