Girl’s Basketball: Varsity Chargers move to 6-1
December 18, 2007 at 2:00 pmAfter falling behind 17-14 after one quarter of play Monday, the Midland Dow varsity girl’s basketball team held Lansing Catholic Central to just 13 points over the next two quarters to help propel the Chargers to a 56-49 win over the Cougars at Lansing Catholic High School.
Becca Mills scored 24 points and had 13 rebounds as Dow improved to 6-1 on the season.
“It was a long trip and it showed in how we started,” said Dow coach Bob Wellman. “But the girls picked it up and gave us a good enough effort to win the ball game”
Leah Kebler added eight points for Dow and Molly Korn had four assists.
“Every player got some good minutes tonight and was a big part of this victory,” Wellman said.
On Friday, the Chargers picked up a key league victory with a 63-57 win over visiting Saginaw High. Mills had 30 points and 12 rebounds in that contest, while Kebler had 22 points and 10 boards. Korn had eight assists.
“This was a great win for our program,” Wellman said. “Saginaw is one of the toughest teams in the league and getting a win at home was great.”
Wellman said the key play of the game occurred with 4:13 to go when Mills was fouled. A Saginaw High player received a technical foul, as well, and Mills hit both of the 1-and-1 free throws and both technical foul shots. Mills was then fouled on the next inbounds play and hit both of those free throws, too.
“We went from a five-point lead to an eleven-point lead in three seconds,” Wellman said. “It was a big turning point of the ball game.”
Next up for the Chargers is Friday’s showdown against cross-town rival Midland at Midland High School. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
