Early foul trouble and an inability to get key stops plagued the Midland High junior varsity girl’s basketball team Tuesday as the Chemics fell to Bay City Western 40-29 at Midland High School.

Two Chemics fouled out and foul problems haunted Midland all night as their season record fell to 3-2. Still, Midland coach Larry Kastl was more impressed with Western’s play than he was dismayed at his own team’s performance.

“Western played a very solid game,” he said. “I was impressed with their outside shooting and their physical defense.”

Kastl was also impressed with the play of Casey Grice, who had 10 points and four rebounds for the Chemics.

“Casey Grice gave us a little spark with her scoring off the bench,” he said.

Also providing a spark was Chelsea Dull – who finished with six points and five rebounds – and Randi Cain who had six points and seven rebounds.

The junior Chemics will return to action Friday when they head south to take on Flint Central. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. and Kastl is anxious to see how the team responds.

“We have to travel to Flint on Friday,” Kastl said. “I want to see how we come back from tonight’s loss.”
