Loons sweep Whitecaps
June 13, 2007 at 9:13 amAn eight-run lead in the bottom half of the ninth inning proved to be just enough for the Great Lakes Loons Tuesday night as they hung on for a 9-7 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps.
Leading 9-1 in the final frame, Matt Gomez de Segura made his Loons’ debut and promptly surrendered four walks and two hits before manager Lance Parrish was forced to bring in Miguel Sanfler out of the bullpen. Sanfler entered and allowed an RBI single to Brennan Boesch, a walk to Brandon Timm, and an RBI walk to Scott Sizemore before getting Audy Ciriaco to fly out and Gorkys Hernandez to ground out to end the game.
Cody White (7-5) pitched five innings and allowed just one run. All seven of White’s wins have come in his last eight appearances. Sanfler was credited with his second save.
Offensively, Eduardo Perez went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and hit his eighth home run of the season. Carlos Santana added two hits and three RBIs.
The Loons swept their first series since winning a snow-shortened two-game series in South Bend to start the season. They improve to 31-34 and have won four straight, which ties a season-long winning streak.
The Loons return to Dow Diamond Wednesday night for the first of two against the Lansing Lugnuts. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
