Baseball: Hawks sweep freshman Chargers

It was a disappointing day for the Dow High freshman baseball team Tuesday as the Chargers dropped both games of a doubleheader to Heritage 18-2 and 7-6.
On the mound to start game one for the Chargers was Christian Curran, who didn’t last an inning against the hard-hitting Hawks. Ryan Store came in to relieve Curran in the first, but another flurry of runs from Heritage in the second forced Dow coach Kerry Salgat into another pitching change.
“They hit the ball well,” he said. “They’re a good team with a very good offense.”
Cory Brzak came in to relieve Store and finished with a solid effort but the Chemics were simply in too big a hole to crawl back out.
Mike Tickner provided the offensive bright spot for the Chargers’, going 2-for-3 with a double.
The second game was a different story as the Chargers lost a heartbreaker. A breakdown in Dow’s defense allowed the Hawks to score five runs in the seventh inning and sweep the doubleheader.
On the mound, Logan Praay threw all seven innings for the Chargers with four strikeouts and five walks.
“He threw an outstanding game” Salgat said afterwards.
Praay also offered a spark for the young team’s offense, going 3-for-4 with a double. Mark Podhorez also had an outstanding offensive game with three hits.
