The Midland High freshman baseball team hosted the Mount Pleasant Oilers and the Saginaw Heritage Hawks in the Midland Freshman Quad Tournament Friday, defeating the Oilers 3-2 in extra innings before falling to the Hawks in game two 8-0.
Ben Singer pitched a gem for the Chemics in game one, allowing just two runs and six hits in seven innings of work. But the Chemics would find themselves deadlocked with the Oilers at 2-2 heading into extra innings. That’s when Nick Somers stepped to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to left which brought in the game-winning run.
Coach Kevin Dodick said he was impressed with his team’s play during the first game and was pleased with the composure the team showed down the stretch.
“We battled hard,” Dodick said. “It was a close game and also showed us how to win in extra innings.”
Game two, however, was a different story for the Chemics. The Hawks were aggressive on offense early, plating two in the second. When it was all said and done, the Hawks would put eight on the board with the help of nine hits and three Chemics’ errors. Meanwhile, the Chemics’ offense could muster only four hits and was shut down from the first pitch to the last out.
“It really shows that we are still freshmen,” Dodick said of the game two loss. “We didn’t do well with the fundamentals. It was a whole different story from game one.”
The Chemics have one final game this season, at home against Mount Pleasant Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
