Schoeninger struck out eight Loons and at one point retired 13 straight. Shortstop P.J. Phillips had two hits, including a triple, and drove in two for the Kernels.
Loons’ righty Michael Gardner allowed four runs (all earned) in four innings in his first start of the season. The Loons committed three errors in the game.
The Loons close their eight-game homestand Tuesday night at Dow Diamond against the Kernels. Game time is 7:05. Top prospect Clayton Kershaw will make his fourth start of the season against fellow first round draft choice Trevor Bell.
