Baseball: Chargers pick up sweep

The Dow Chargers varsity baseball team swept a doubleheader at Flint Southwestern on Monday by scores of 14-2 in five innings and 18-1 in three innings.

Senior Nick Bruns (1-2) earned the win in game one, throwing just one inning and allowing one hit, two walks, and one run while striking out three. Junior Andy Best struck out four in two innings, allowing two hits, and one run. Senior Matt Skirving threw the final two innings, striking out all six batters he faced.

Offensively the Chargers were led by senior Tim McDonald who was 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Skirving was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, and senior Connor Hanlon was 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

In game two, sophomore Tori Nelson (2-0) earned the victory. Nelson threw two innings, giving up one hit, one unearned run, and striking out four. Reed Swift threw the final inning giving up one hit and striking out two.

Senior Brett Lechner was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs. Hanlon was 2-for-2 with three RBIs, and senior Jimmy Durfee was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

With the wins, the Chargers improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the Saginaw Valley. They will host Mt. Pleasant on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
